(Public Speaking Tip #25)
Figure Out Your “Why?”
Generally speaking, Why do you do what you do? Why are you an influencer? Why did you decide to start your own business? One’s answer to the question of “why” often shows if they are passionate about their craft or not. If you are a lawyer, then perhaps you grew up watching your mom go over cases at nighttime while also cooking dinner for the family. Her dedication to defending those wrongly accused may have constantly inspired you. If you are a doctor, then maybe you had a loved one whose pain you wish you could have eased before they ultimately transitioned. What I’m trying to say is that you can usually pinpoint different experiences in a person’s life that helped influenced why they do what they do. Fortunately, there are many people who are able to do what they love every single day. It never feels like work. Equally stating, there are many who get up every day and go to work, but it’s because they have to. They don’t love what they do. They are always wishing they could be doing something else. So with that being said, which side of the spectrum would you want to be on?
Personally, I don’t want to wake up feeling like I have to go to work every day. I don’t want to dread it. If I ever chose to have a family, I don’t want to come home every day unfulfilled and not being able to give them my time and my love because I’m drained and frustrated. That’s why I work hard every day to ultimately do what I love. It pains me more to know that I didn’t try, versus failing constantly on my path of building my business. Many things motivate me to provide Public Speaking Coaching. I enjoy helping people discover how polished Public Speaking skills can help them feel confident. I also enjoy helping entrepreneurs market their brands from the stage and inspire others. Knowing that I helped someone overcome their fear of Public Speaking, which millions of Americans deal with, truly makes me feel satisfied. That’s my “Why?”. But there also some other reasons that can constitute your “Why?”
Some people speak up to 100 times a year, while some speakers speak no more than 10 times a year. There are multiple reasons you can find yourself on the stage. If you have any type of business, you can grow it by building an audience through speaking. Being that we are in a different time now with COVID, many of you are doing an alternate form of this through Instagram Live. It’s the same as if you were on stage, except now you can do it from your home and you have the opportunity to promote or sell a product to an even bigger or smaller audience (more defined audience). Maybe you want to be deemed a subject matter expert in a certain field or on a certain topic. When done the correct way, speaking can bring you that credibility you want. You are able to share your expertise on a particular topic and people automatically think of you whenever that topic comes to mind. As you see, there are multiple reasons to embrace speaking and I haven’t even mentioned the most obvious.
Money motivates millions around the world and as a Public Speaker you can make a lot of money. Ten of the right speaking gigs can potentially replace the average person’s yearly salary. 100 speaking gigs could have you demanding a quarter million dollar yearly income. But with all that being said, if money is your main motive of being a Public Speaker or pursuing any career, then you might be let down. There will always be someone making more than you and someone making less than you. At what point does your love for what you do outweigh the amount of money you can make? Whatever it is you love doing, before you venture onto your journey, figure out your why. Make note of it… write it down.. because when times get hard.. it will help to see it written down on your mirror or on your door. There will be times where you will forget or become frustrated and you’ll need a reminder. If you never lose focus of your “why”, you’ll be able to fulfill your destiny. I know because I’m doing it now. You can too!

Public Speaking Tip #24:
“Believe In Yourself”
It’s taken belief for me to get to the point where I’m at right now. When I started my Public Speaking Coaching business, I set out to eliminate one’s fear and hesitancy of Public Speaking. If you think of ghosts, strangers, drowning, heights…
